Dinosaurs on a Spaceship review/thoughts

(although, funnily enough ...my husband said, "Not a good sign when Doctor Who starts taking creative tips from Snakes on a Plane" XD)

I actually really enjoyed this ep, ngl XD It was a fun romp.

And I **loved** the girl-power motif. So obviously not a Moffat episode.
[Spoiler (click to open)]

1. What's up with Nefertiti? If I were an Eleven/River shipper I'd be miffed. And if I were Amy Pond, I'd be WAY suspicious - when Nefertiti is prompting her to see if the Doctor is attached, Amy doesn't even mention "yeah he sorta married my daughter in an alternate timeline." Which I think just goes to show that Moffat - kind of like he intimated in The Big Book - doesn't consider them really properly married. ((OK, getting off soapbox now. I just like it when new canon backs my personal views up, ngl)).

2. I think it's cool that finally - FINALLY FINALLY - we are seeing the family of a companion in the Moffat era. And I love that Rory's dad kind of dresses like him. And thinks that piloting a spaceship is "better than golf" XD

3. I really don't know how to characterize the Eleven and Amy relationship at this point. I'd never gotten the impression they were particularly close, and now he just seems to dart in and out of her life pretty casually, like an annoying relative that asks to spend the night on your sofa.

4. BAD WOLF BAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is it really sad and lame and fangirly pathetic that I recognized it at first sight? XD

5. "And you Amy, are you also queen?"
    ((self-conscious pause))
    "Yes. Yes I am."
.... I'm not sure I've ever liked Amy as much as I did when she said that XD

6. I love the bitchy robots XD WHO PEE OIL WHEN THEY'RE SCARED!!!!!! OMG LOLOLOL. Chris Chibnall, apology accepted for Hungry Earth/In Cold Blood XD

7. It's a really minor point, but I'm not sure how I feel about the re-use of the name "Solomon". Yeah it's biblical and all, but there are a TON of biblical names out there, and as fun as this episode is turning out to be, nothing is more beautiful than angsty!s3!Ten

8. Omg ... poor Silurians ... repeatedly massacred by Chris Chibnall in so many, many different ways =(

9. I still maintain that the music is weird as all hell this season.

10. I really liked how Indira was clearly not happy about having to make the decision to launch the missiles. The reaction shot was quite nice.

11. I loved -- LOVED -- the Eleven/Rory kiss. I don't care about the characterization here and the fact the Eleven woulda TOTALLY thought of defense systems on his own- it was priceless and I think kinda underscores the fact that the Doctor doesn't always think about kissing/sexuality/etc in the same context as humans -- which I really like to see on the show

12. I really liked Nefertiti. She was everything that someone like Reinette (in canon, at least), wasn't - determined to be in charge of her own destiny -- not just a victim to it -- and brave - she saved everyone, didn't just scream for help. Even when confronted with potential torture, she just stared him down - too proud and too good to ask for help, and determined to save others. I kinda fell in love with her a lil bit, ngl. And then she hooks up with what's-his-face at the end ... just because she can!!

13. Speaking of which ... do I even need to talk about the girl-power thing in here? Amy being a HBIC, unwilling to tolerate sexist crap, and Nefertiti ... and even Indira, who we didn't see a lot of, but who showed a lot of texture.

14. And Eleven just lets Solomon die. Dark, seriously. Very human of him ... I wish we saw more exploration of this, and I think it would be amazing characterization ... but given the current head writer, I don't think that likely at all. Still ... wow. Not sure he woulda done that if Solomon hadn't killed the tricerotops.

15. Omg. Rory's dad's greatest wish with all of time and space at his disposal was to ask to see Earth from above. Just the quiet, peaceful beauty of home. And how it inspires him to appreciate the beauty of home, and travel ... that's ... just ... just ...

I agree with most of what you've written, but I'm a little confused. Hoping someone can explain. So, if the Doctor's been erased from everywhere... basically, what about what River said in AGMGTW? She said the word "Doctor" was interpreted in many cultures to mean warrior or something like that. Does that mean that is no longer true? Sorry, I get confused with universal re-writes and timey wimey type plots.

I think the Doctor was only erased from the Dalek's history. So everyone else still remembers who he is.

Hmm what about that moment Solomon looked the Doctor up to see what he was worth and nothing came up?
ladysophiekittyladysophiekitty on September 9th, 2012 04:58 am (UTC)
Oh, I haven't seen the episode, so I don't know.

That is odd. I was already feeling meh about the Dalek stuff, definitely don't want it so that NOBODY knows who the Doctor is.
kelkat9 on September 9th, 2012 12:33 pm (UTC)
Yep, that's the moment that made me scratch my head. I mean that moment when River tells him about what "Doctor" means is pretty significant and a powerful moment. It would be a shame to invalidate it.

Your review makes me love the ep even more :) I didn't like the actress who played Nefertiti, but the girl power was definitely enjoyable!

So it was Bad Wolf bay, not just me going mad!
Rory's dad was awesome. It felt good to have some proper family/character interactions for once. Surprisingly, I liked Asylum (in spite of some cringe-worthy points, but it's Moffat, so...) but this one was so much better in terms of dialogue and characterization.

I liked that we got to see a darker Eleven, but I agree that it probably won't get developed as it would deserve to be. Shame :/
anna_sg1anna_sg1 on September 9th, 2012 11:12 am (UTC)
Not the only one. Also thought it was Bad Wlf Bay immediately.

LOL Chibnall really hated the Silurians. XD

I liked this ep just fine. (The beginning was so RANDOM though. Why did the Doctor even go pick up what-his-name-hunter-guy? And why did he even bring Nefertiti with him?)

Agreed about Nefertiti I just really didn't like she ended up with the hunter dude. I know we were supposed to see their arguments as flirting but it just left me feeling uncomfortable. I didn't like the hunter at all.

As for the Doctor killing Solomon - I liked it and didn't? IDK how to explain it. Like, I wish Eleven had a recognizable emotional arc that I can follow and then go OH YEAH HE'S SLOWLY LOSING IT or something, but I can't so W/E I guess this week he's like that, next week he won't be.

Amy was amazing. ♥ And completely agreed on #3, Eleven really doesn't seem to need the Ponds. Or any kind of lasting companions. Not at this point anyway.

1. I still assume nothing about the River/Eleven relationship til I see them on screen again this season, and even then I won't believe any of it cause it's Moffat. (And does River mostly show up in the episodes he writes ir is it just my imagination?)

2. Brian is awesome! I am sooooooo glad we finally got to see soime family, long enough to actually identify that they are family and see a bit of their character. PLUS PLUS PLUS, he went with the Doctor for a while (well, I assume so given the postcard from 'Siluria'), and now I want him to be a companion for a while :P

4. Yeah, I did that too.... Damn Bad Wolf Bay!

6. I felt childish, but didn't care, those robots were just too much fun!

11. That was pretty damn brilliant. Often see him kiss the girls, mostly on the forehead sure, but it was great to see him smooch Rory :D

12. Yes, I like Nefertiti. Admittedly, wasn't sure at the start but through the episode, yep, she's BAMF!

13. How to tell this WASN'T written by Moffat!!!!
Katherine: Cloen smilespicandspan89 on September 10th, 2012 11:25 pm (UTC)
Yes, Moffat writes all of the episodes in which River appears. This leads to the impression that she's a non-entity between episodes... :-/
fogsbluefogsblue on September 11th, 2012 04:31 am (UTC)
I thought so...

Now I wonder if this is because Moffat doesn't want anyone else writing her or everyone else prefers not to include her?

*g* An intriguing question indeed!

Yes, Bad Wolf Bay was my first thought!

I really can't imagine Eleven and Riven not having an open relationship. Yeah they have a thing, there is love and a lot of chemistry but they don't wait at home for each other.

River is, no doubt, breaking out of prison and having fun with boys and girls and so can the Doctor.

And I love how they did the family thing, not some soppy melodrama mess but a cool character who was useful and likeable. And really well fleshed out with out a lot of non-plot progressing time waisted on them.

Nefertiti was so awesome. Loved her. So was Amy. Woo, Queens!

I loved the choice to have the Doctor kill Solomon. It was nicely done too. not over the top. No tears or angst. Just a person doing what must be done and moving on with his heart a little heavier.

Yeah, great episode.

This review is too cute. :3

I felt for the Silurians too. Forever screwed over by humanity.

You know what? I liked it too! Being from Chibnall, of course it wasn't perfect. But having Nefertiti, Arthur Weasley, Filch, and Inspector Lestrade on a spaceship with dinosaurs made up for everything lol.

And yes we FINALLY got to meet another family member. Rory's dad = ♥

It was kinda weird that Amy didn't mention that the Doctor is her sort-of son-in-law when she saw Nefertiti macking on him. Like, does River only exist in the episodes in which she appears?

...Come to think of it, that would explain a lot. XD

And IA, I still don't buy Amy and the Doctor's ~close friendship. It is pretty sad that she spends her life waiting for him to come back. But then the whole "Girl Who Waited" arc rubs me the wrong way, so.

I totally squeed over Bad Wolf Bay! Also that the raptors had feathers. /dino geek

I loved this ep, too, it's already in the running for season favourite for me. (Even though Chibnall obviously doesn't know what "queen" means in Egyptian, but oh well.) XD

I didn't recognise Bad Wolf Bay, though, and I feel like a bad shipper...
Katherine: CloenRose kissspicandspan89 on September 11th, 2012 04:45 am (UTC)
lol Chibnall. He is still not redeemed for Hungry Earth/Cold Blood IMO. Maybe it's best he stays away from two-parters?

Aww you're definitely not a bad shipper! It took me a minute, until I remembered the Beeb's penchant for reusing sets and locations. XD
saiyakosaiyako on September 11th, 2012 04:58 am (UTC)
I never got what everyone hated so much about Hungry Earth to begin with. (42, though. *shudder*)
Katherine: Idris TARDISspicandspan89 on September 12th, 2012 12:16 am (UTC)
lol I'm the opposite. Despite its problems, I still enjoy 42. Hungry Earth... IDK I just thought it was boring. The pacing wasn't the best, and the dynamic between the humans and the Silurians felt really cliched to me. Like, it was obvious that the mom was going to kill the prisoner, but I found the mom's character was so unlikeable that there was no conflict. I did like the female scientist one-off companion. YMMV of course - if you liked it, more power to you! (I don't enjoy disliking my favourite show, lol.)

Haven't started seeing, but if there are at least some fun episodes, I may just watch it for pure entertainment (*sigh* feels, where did you go?), but seeing how it's run by Moffat, it's doubtful. *Ready to let season 7 gather dust before watching*
